Stephen's story

University of York employee Stephen recently won an e-bike worth £1,100 in the BetterPoints York challenge.

For your chance to win prizes such as this, and earn rewards for walking, cycling and taking the bus, download the app via the App Store or Google Play or by scanning the QR code at the bottom of the page.

How did you find out about the app and why did you choose to get involved?

“I found out through a colleague at work. They said you essentially get paid for walking, which is exactly what has happened. My job involves quite a bit of walking, whilst I have always tried to take the bus, bike and train when I can, so it was a no-brainer.

What did you think when you won the prize?

“My reaction was one of amazement, I couldn’t wait to tell people at work!

How have your travel habits changed since using the app?

“My life has changed since I got the app as I got diagnosed with prostate cancer. Prior to this I would cycle to work. I would enjoy 6 to 8 mile walks on the weekend too. But because of my condition I have been driving instead. Cycling was too demanding for me physically.
However, things are on the way up now. I am out of my treatment, getting physically stronger, and back at work on reduced hours. The e-bike is really timely as it allows me to cycle without the effort of a regular bike. I gently rotate my legs and I’m whizzing along in no time.
I took it to work the other day and it was great. After a tiring day it was nice and easy to pedal home. It’s a fantastic route, mostly along an old railway track and cycle lanes.
I intend to use the e-bike to get to work once or twice a week. I’m so pleased to have it as an option given my physical state.

What do you enjoy about using the app?

“I enjoy seeing how active I am. If I go somewhere, I will check in afterwards to look at my activity stats and the route I’ve taken. It’s proving very useful as I monitor my recovery. I’m encouraged when I see that I have walked or cycled somewhere quicker than I did the previous time.
I enjoy earning the points too of course. My wife has told me to spend them on John Lewis vouchers, but I’ve rebelled with my most recent redemption! I got myself a York Gift Card, which you can use at small businesses in York. I think it’s an important thing to support the local economy.”
