BetterPoints York allows everyone who lives, works or studies in York to earn rewards and win prizes for walking, running, cycling and using the bus. One such prize is the iTravel Inspiration. Gemma was chosen as our latest winner and received a £25 York Gift Card for sharing her story. For your chance to win, download the app via the App Store or Google Play or by scanning the QR code at the bottom of the page.
BetterPoints York user Gemma has been using the app since late 2021, and her commitment to walking and public transport has helped her earn over £230 in rewards, win gift cards, and make meaningful savings along the way. Here is what she had to say:

How did you find out about the app and why did you choose to get involved?
“I signed up ages ago. I’ve been using it for a number of years now. I am a money saver on Instagram, so I am always on the lookout for different things you can do to help the finances. I came across it whilst Googling.
I’ve managed to win quite a few gift cards and points prizes. I’ve used them at Sainsbury’s and Boots mainly, but there are plenty of options. I even used some to buy a new winter jacket.
Before joining BetterPoints York, what were your travel habits like?
“I used to live in Northallerton, north of York. I had a car and would use it a lot. I would walk quite a bit, but it was mainly car.
A few years ago I moved to The Shambles, right in the heart of the city. It changed how I travelled. I could get most places by walking, bus or train. I had no need for the car, so I sold it. I live in Skeldergate now, which isn’t as central as before, but I still choose to get around without a car. I have a parking space at my house, but I rent it out.
How has the app helped you to travel more actively and sustainably? What features do you enjoy?
“The prizes offer a lot of encouragement. I’ll check the app to see if my name is amongst the list of winners
I like that it tracks your journeys automatically. I have similar apps which record activities, but you have to constantly turn them on and off, whereas BetterPoints works in the background.
I also like that it has an environmental focus as well as health. I want to be more eco-friendly, and the app makes me feel like I’m doing my bit.
What are your travel habits like at the moment?
“I do some nannying and cat sitting on the outskirts of York and to get there I’ll take the bus, especially at this time of year when the weather is freezing.
I love the bus! I don’t know why more people don’t. Many of the services I use have bus lanes which allow you to skip the traffic. Overall, I think they’re brilliant.
What benefits have you noticed as a result?
“I have more money in my bank account. Being more active means I feel energised and better mentally. I feel more motivated to do things.”
